About Us
Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has an estate of four residential children homes that provides accommodation and/or short breaks to children and young people. This is made up of two Mainstream Residential Children's Homes and two Specialist Disability Children's Homes.
Mainstream Residential Children’s Homes:
Generally, children reside in one of our Mainstream Residential Children's Homes because they are unable to live at home, or with other family members or carers. These homes provide a range of care for children, some with emotional and behavioural difficulties. At present we have two mainstream residential children's homes. Lyndene & Oakhurst.
Lyndene is a 3 bed children's home in the village of Edwinstowe, and Oakhurst is a 4 bed children's home in Mansfield. Both homes support children who have experienced early childhood trauma which impacts their emotional development. We believe it’s important to create an environment where a child’s spiritual, cultural, educational, health leisure and life experiences are met in a non-institutional way. We strive to create and maintain homely, welcoming g atmosphere where children feel safe, nurtured, listened to, valued, respected and cared for. Our Goal is to support children in finding alternative and positive ways to communicate and develop. The staff team provide routine, structure, new experiences for children, fun, and a sense of achievement – building positive relationships with all our children and being positive role models ourselves.
Specialist Disability Children’s Homes:
The Big House – is a six bedded, purpose-build home which provides short breaks for children and young people aged up to 18 years of age. We have expertise in working with children with severe intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, medical and sensory needs. Along with the overnights, The Big House can also provide day care if needed.
The Big House provides a sensory room, chill out room and additional quiet rooms as well as the communal areas. There are lots of indoor activities and games for the children to enjoy on ab individual basis or with peers. Theres is also a practical kitchen for the children to increase their skills to support their development. Outside, the grounds are extensive and incorporate a large, totally safe play area. There are swings cycles (and track) equipment designed to challenge and improve dexterity and mobility. The Big House supports children to go out in the community engaging in lots of different activities which include, bowling, swimming, gymnastics and discos – to name a few.
Caudwell House – is a 12 bedded children establishment which provides residential care and short breaks to children and young people aged between 10-18 years of age with physical disabilities and associated learning difficulties and/or health care needs.
